King Lear follows the king of the same name, and his fractured relationship between his daughters and his subjects. For our rendition, we wanted to focus on how Shakespeare writes nature into his story. Nature as in both human nature, characters' relationships with each other and how they break, and the natural world. Nature itself continuously surrounds our characters throughout this play. I built a score that, like nature itself could be ever present. At the same time, it was also built to not take the focus of the scene, and keep the energy of the show moving forward. In representing the fracturing of these relationships, and the breakdown of mother nature, we decided to build a sonic world inspired by metal music. I also played with the contrast of using acoustic instruments (Guitars, drums, metal pipes, didgeridoos, etc) and electric instruments to represent the fracturing of nature and human nature.
Storms of War
This sequence takes place during the final battle between King Lear, his daughters, and their armies. Most of the relationships in the show have fallen apart, mother nature has completely shattred. Here the score served as a sonic support to the energy of the battle, and a metaphorical representation of human nature and mother nature fracturing.

Edgar's Breakdown

This sequence takes place after Edgar is fooled by his brother into thinking that his father wants to kill him. As he unravels his plan to disguise himself. As his mind begins to unravel, the music unravels with him. With the music unraveling as he does, I built a piece that underscored the monologue, and keep the audience focused on the text at hand. The text describes the rage and turmoil that Edgar feels, and the music serves as an accent mark giving the audience a sonic representation of his breakdown. Here, we continue the representation of human nature and mother nature fracturing.
Lear's Descent
This is the first time we see King Lear post intermission. In this moment, King Lear has completely lost his mind. King Lear and nature are imbalanced. There is nothing to fear in this moment, but something is wrong. To support these ideas musically I built a piece that felt ominous. A piece that moved about the space like the wind through trees.
